The Image of a Child: Spectra's Latest Weapon From Their Propaganda Arsenal

Saturday, January 8, 2011

Several Jersey City residents have made us aware of a post card that is being sent out by Spectra Energy, claiming "safety" and featuring the images of children.  (See below.)  Exploiting the image of a child to emotively sell their dangerous pipeline – this should tell you something about how they operate and the credibility of their claims to safety and stewardship.

Case in point.  The front of their post card says, "We have been operating pipelines in New Jersey for more than 60 years ... and we're committed to the highest safety standards."  They conveniently leave out the fact that the massive pipeline explosion in Edison, NJ in 1994 was their pipeline.

Articles will note that it's Texas Eastern Corporation. Know that they are a Spectra Energy subsidiary and is the same subsidiary that will be running this pipeline.  As the Wikipedia page notes:

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation found a gouge in the pipe, probably caused by excavation equipment years earlier; in combination with brittle pipe material and excessive operating pressures likely led to the rupture. NTSB also found fault with the lack of automatic or remote-controlled shutoff valves: the manual valves were difficult to reach and close, preventing operators from promptly cutting off gas that fueled the fire. Also, NTSB found that Texas Eastern failed to adequately monitor excavation activity on its right of way.

Note that our pipeline will not have an automatic shut-off valve.

Amazing claims... they will say anything!
