NO Gas Pipeline Refutes Spectra Energy’s Proposed Interconnect Benefit in Bayonne, NJ
Toxic Gas Pipeline to Increase Health Costs for Bayonne Residents
Jersey City, NJ - NO Gas Pipeline said that Spectra's press release of September 6th was insignificant and merely confirmed what was previously announced in February 2011 when Marylee Hanley, spokesperson for Spectra Energy, stated “We have reached verbal agreement with IMTT [the International Matex Tank Terminal] to connect with their facility in Bayonne."
Spectra Energy has stated on it's website that it's pipeline transmission "Capacity: 800 million cubic feet per day (mmcf/d)" for the New Jersey - New York City Expansion Project.means that this International-Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT), a national bulk liquids storage company, and Bayonne Plant Holding LLC (BPH) announcement for "40,000 Mcf (thousand cubic feet) per day" is less than 5% of Spectra's total transmission capacity for this pipeline expansion.
Spectra Interconnect Insignificant
"Dale Hardman, President of NO Gas Pipeline, said "The amount of this Spectra agreement is insignificant to the benefit of Hudson County and Jersey City residents and still does not connect to PSE&G as Spectra had previously announced their intent. In fact,it was previously reported in April, 2011 by "Karen Johnson, a spokesperson for PSE&G initially said, “PSE&G is not involved in this project and, at this time, does not expect to be a taker of gas from the pipeline when it is built.”William Schulte, Acting Director with The Eastern Environmental Law said "This agreement with IMTT and BHP does next to nothing in terms of justifying the safety risks that this project poses to New Jersey residents. The agreement represents a fraction of the pipeline's capacity. Also, BHP is a small merchant plant, so it is hard to imagine that the agreement will have any impact whatsoever on electricity costs to NJ consumers. Moreover, an existing Transco pipeline will be providing natural gas to the 512 MW Bayonne Energy Center, which is directly adjacent to IMTT. There is plenty of access to natural gas in that area of Bayonne already."
Jersey City Against Spectra
NO Gas Pipeline previously announced their intention to join Mayor Jerramiah Healy in Jersey City, NJ Sierra Club and Food and Water Watch to file for intervenor legal standing against the natural gas pipeline proposed by Spectra Energy.Intervenor status is legal standing that is part of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)process of approval of natural gas pipeline projects. Only Federal Courts may overrule FERC rulings and only intervenors are able to be part of that legal process. NO Gas Pipeline will be represented pro bono as intervenors against FERC by The Eastern Environmental Law Center (EELC), a non-profit public interest environmental law firm working on behalf of environmental and conservation groups to protect communities, open space, wildlife, and the natural heritage of the eastern United States for generations to come. Located in Newark, New Jersey, the EELC is the sole public interest environmental law firm in New Jersey. www.easternenergy.orgy
Methane Gas More Toxic
Dale Hardman of NO Gas Pipeline said, "We are concerned with the continuing reliance on natural gas. The May report in Climatic Change Letters by Professor Robert Howarth of Cornell, says methane gas is up to "105 times more warming impact" than coal to the Greenhouse Warming Potential (GWP) over 20 years. The study also shows that fracked gas, as will be transmitted by Spectra from the Marcellus Shale, is 20% more toxic and other studies show that hydro-fracked gas also carries higher levels of radioactive radon. Pollutants from gas leakage and gas burning in the home mean a toxic risk to residents, agriculture and the environment. More reasons we must pursue alternatives to all fossil fuels that are sustainable and renewable.
Christie's Energy Master Plan The alternatives to fossil fuels are threatened by Governor Christie's refusal to sign the Ban Fracking bill which would impact the Delaware River and drinking water in New Jersey due to possible drilling in the Utica Shale which is more evidence of material lack of disclosure leading to fraud. In addition, Christie's new Energy Master Plan is also ill thought out and jeopardizes the gains we've made on solar energy for instance to benefit all in New Jersey. NO Gas Pipeline continues to urge all to sign their petition against the pipeline and to call Governor Christie to sign the ban fracking bill."
